Tips for Avoiding Home Invasions
- Have lights in all entrances. Keep your driveway
and garage area well lit
- Have good locks on all doors, garages and windows.
- Never leave your garage door open - do not get out
of the car, or unlock it until your garage door is
completely closed.
- Do not use your full name on your mailbox, in the
phone directory, or on an answering machine.
- Do not leave a schedule of your times away from
home on your answering machine
- Keep a cell phone on your belt or in your purse.
There are many inexpensive cell phone plans designed
for emergencies.
- Do not have cars with out of state plates parked
in front of your home.
- If you live alone, do not let strangers know.
Invent a roommate or big dog.
- Know which of your neighbors you can trust in an
emergency.
- Check who is at the door before you open it, and
do not open the door to an unexpected visitor. If
you don't have a peep hole in front door get one
installed.
- Do not hide extra keys in easily accessible
places. Criminals will find them.
- Ask for identification of all repair persons, etc.
If you are still suspicious, call to verify
employment.
- Never give personal information to telephone
solicitors.
- Consider creating a "safe room" with a separate
telephone line or cellular phone, and strong locks.
If someone breaks in, you can retreat there (with
children) and call for help.
- Do not let strangers in your home to use the
telephone. Offer to make the call for them.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Do not unlock your
car until you have checked it out. When in your car
keep it locked.
- If you have an evening activity, establish a
calling tree to assure that everyone has arrived
home safely.
- If you feel that someone has followed you home, do
not stop at your home but continue on to a safe
area.

If You Are Victimized
- Don't try to fight for your belongings - it's not
worth it.
- Be a good witness by memorizing details of the
suspect - height, hair color, eye color, clothing,
tattoos, car model and color, bumper stickers, voice
and anything else that can help the police identify
the suspect.
- Don't panic, retain your composure, get a good
description and notify police immediately.
- If a purse or wallet is stolen, be sure to cancel
all of your credit cards and debit cards
immediately, notify your bank that the cards were
stolen.
