Tips for Avoiding Home Invasions

  • Have lights in all entrances. Keep your driveway and garage area well lit
  • Have good locks on all doors, garages and windows.
  • Never leave your garage door open - do not get out of the car, or unlock it until your garage door is completely closed.
  • Do not use your full name on your mailbox, in the phone directory, or on an answering machine.
  • Do not leave a schedule of your times away from home on your answering machine
  • Keep a cell phone on your belt or in your purse. There are many inexpensive cell phone plans designed for emergencies.
  • Do not have cars with out of state plates parked in front of your home.
  • If you live alone, do not let strangers know. Invent a roommate or big dog.
  • Know which of your neighbors you can trust in an emergency.
  • Check who is at the door before you open it, and do not open the door to an unexpected visitor. If you don't have a peep hole in front door get one installed.
  • Do not hide extra keys in easily accessible places. Criminals will find them.
  • Ask for identification of all repair persons, etc. If you are still suspicious, call to verify employment.
  • Never give personal information to telephone solicitors.
  • Consider creating a "safe room" with a separate telephone line or cellular phone, and strong locks. If someone breaks in, you can retreat there (with children) and call for help.
  • Do not let strangers in your home to use the telephone. Offer to make the call for them.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Do not unlock your car until you have checked it out. When in your car keep it locked.
  • If you have an evening activity, establish a calling tree to assure that everyone has arrived home safely.
  • If you feel that someone has followed you home, do not stop at your home but continue on to a safe area.
  • Do not hesitate to contact the Sun City West Posse, 584-5808, with any questions or to report suspicious activities around your or your neighbor's property.
  • IF IT'S AN EMERGENCY CALL 911.

If You Are Victimized

  • Don't try to fight for your belongings - it's not worth it.
  • Be a good witness by memorizing details of the suspect - height, hair color, eye color, clothing, tattoos, car model and color, bumper stickers, voice and anything else that can help the police identify the suspect.
  • Don't panic, retain your composure, get a good description and notify police immediately.
  • If a purse or wallet is stolen, be sure to cancel all of your credit cards and debit cards immediately, notify your bank that the cards were stolen.
